IPWEA Conference

1 July 2017

Recently the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) held their annual New Zealand Conference in Dunedin from 22 to 24 June 2017. Over 350 national and international delegates attended the conference which included presentations of technical papers where ‘Blurring the Lines – Integrating our Efforts’ set the theme.

Our Design Manager, Troy Brockbank, had the honour of attending and presenting on behalf of the co-authors of “NZ's Largest Proprietary Treatment Device - An Innovative Centralised Stormwater Treatment & Pumping Facility”. This presentation provided an insight of the design of New Zealand’s largest StormFilter for the Richardson Terrace Pump station project in Christchurch, a collaboration between Opus, Beca, Christchurch City Council (CCC) and Stormwater360.

The project was part of CCC’s Land Drainage Recovery Programme (LDRP) to address flood risk mitigation in Christchurch’s Bells Creek-Woolston catchment, an area identified at greater risk of flooding since the earthquakes due to ground subsidence. The aim was to restore the flooding risks to 'pre-earthquake levels' and develop sensible area-wide solutions that offer the most benefit, to the most people.

The design included an end of line stormwater pump station to receive peak stormwater flows from the 160 hectare mixed residential/commercial catchment, when the existing gravity fed and tidal influenced reticulation is at capacity, and pump discharge into the Heathcote River.

The project offered a unique opportunity to retro-fit a large-scale stormwater treatment device upstream of the proposed pump station to reduce adverse environmental downstream effects. A 570 cartridge StormFilter was proposed due to its superior performance and legacy to remove contaminates, namely dissolved metals and Total Suspended Solids (TSS), to safe effluent levels as identified under the Heathcote Stormwater Management Plan.
